The Messe brève no.7 'Aux Chapelles', in C major dates from the 1890's. With its purity of line and transparent polyphony, its melodic simplicity and the economy of its modulations, the Messe brevè no.7 is characteristic of Gounod's religious style, that is marked by the influence of Palestrina and which also evokes the German Cecilian movement.
