Orphan Girl (SATB) - Brendan Graham
Orphan Girl (SATB) - Brendan Graham
arranged for solo and SATB choir by Desmond Earley
Arranged for solo voice, SATB choir and piano, Orphan Girl is a song of hope, the hope of a girl to escape the workhouse during the Irish Famine years and to travel to make a new life in Australia. At the time the British Crown was encouraging girls to emigrate as a means to redress the gender balance in the colonies – there were simply too many men and not enough women. Over four thousand young women took this journey between 1848 and 1850. The composer Brendan Graham expressed his own hope that this song might have significance for the descendants of those girls, many of whom were present at the song’s first performance in 2012 at the Irish Famine Commemoration in Sydney.
